Learn the Zipper Merge!

If you had a freeway billboard, what would it say?

Both lanes are used fully up to the merge point!

  • At the point where one lane ends, drivers take turns merging:
    • One car from the left lane
    • One car from the right lane
  • Just like the teeth of a zipper coming together.

When to Use It

✔ Heavy traffic
✔ Stop-and-go or slow-moving conditions
✔ Clearly marked lane closures (“Lane Ends Ahead”)

🚫 Not necessary in light traffic (early merging works fine when there’s plenty of space)

Why It Works

Traffic studies show zipper merging:

  • Reduces queue length by up to ~40%
  • Prevents one lane from backing up excessively
  • Reduces rear-end collisions
  • Keeps traffic flowing more evenly

Early merging in heavy traffic causes:

  • Long backups in one lane
  • Aggressive behavior
  • Lane blocking and sudden braking

Driver in the Ending Lane

  1. Stay in your lane until the merge point.
  2. Match the speed of traffic.
  3. Signal early.
  4. At the merge point, move smoothly into the open lane behind one vehicle.
  5. Do not stop unless traffic is stopped.

Driver in the Through Lane

  1. Expect cars to merge at the end.
  2. Leave one car length of space.
  3. Maintain a steady speed.
  4. Allow one vehicle in, then continue.
  5. Do not block the ending lane.

Blocking is unsafe and often illegal.

Common Myths (and the Truth)

❌ “Using the open lane until the end is cutting in line”
✅ It’s the intended design in heavy traffic.

❌ “Merging early is more polite.”
✅ Early merging actually makes congestion worse when traffic is heavy.

❌ “I should stop them from merging”
✅ Lane blocking increases crash risk and road rage.

Key Rule to Remember

Early merge in light traffic.
Zipper merge in heavy traffic.

Be mindful of your thoughts

Do you spend more time thinking about the future or the past? Why?

I think I balance the anxiety and depression throughs evenly. Anxiety involves worrying about future events and making predictions that your brain is trying to prepare for, even though they may not actually occur.

Depression is worrying about all the things that have occurred in the past. Dumb things you say to people and ruminate over after they’ve probably long forgotten.

I try to spend more time thinking about the present and the tasks that need to be completed today. I’m working on enjoying the moment more and building memories with all five senses. You have to learn to kill the ANTs (automatic negative thoughts) as they try to invade your brain.

Eternal life

What is the greatest gift someone could give you?

Do we all have eternal life? Whether it be with God or separated from God. Once the soul is created, is it ever destroyed? One would argue that being annihilated is more in line with God’s mercy than eternal life apart from God. In the case of justice, annihilationism is the ultimate comfort for evil-doers. If I know that there is an end to suffering, then why not just do whatever we want right now? Where is the justice in punishment for evil?

God will not force you into his presence for all eternity nor will he extinquish your existence. If you don’t want to be with God, then he will give you what you want. That’s the greatest gift.

University of the United States

What colleges have you attended?

When I applied to USA, the University of South Alabama, I thought of a movie scene. In the Eddie Murphy classic “Coming to America” he is asked about where he goes to school. “Well, it’s a very small university. We do not even have a basketball team.”

Work hard, play hard

Do you play in your daily life? What says “playtime” to you?

I don’t even know what playtime is. Does that mean you play with toys? Does that mean you play with video games? Does that mean you play a sport? I find very little time to play in the constant balance of work and family, but I know that I should play more as a part of a self-care routine.

Early bird gets the anxiety

What time do you go to bed and wake up currently?

I go to bed when I’m sleepy and wake up when I’m ready. Typically about 7 hours of sleep on average. It does no good to snooze unless you can get a full sleep cycle which is typically 90 minutes. I don’t set an alarm unless I have to be somewhere. Currently I’m waking up around 6 am.

Find your secret place

How do you practice self-care?

Drugs, alcohol, caffeine, and nicotine; all these things are not helpful. The best thing you can do for yourself is be alone with yourself and your thoughts. Get rid of those thoughts that are negative. Focus on the ones that are positive stay in the moment be mindful of the “living force” as Qui-Gon used to say.

Make sure you get enough sleep, get some sunlight first thing in the morning, and eat good foods. And don’t forget to exercise.

Find your secret place where you can quiet your mind to pray and meditate on the one true God. Thank him for the saving grace and common grace that he extends to you every day.
